Why Do I Need a Compelling Hook?

Hooks are a marketing tool that is designed to draw in relevant customers. They speak to a specific pain point or hint at specific knowledge that draws in the people you want to attract. As one of the best tools to help you stay competitive in the world of digital marketing, powerful hooks can foster a meaningful, lasting connection because they address audience aspirations. They work for blog posts, personal stories, social media captions, or anything in between.

Hooks can form an emotional connection with a reader, they can make them laugh, or they can surprise them. No matter what you do, your hook must be interesting. Compelling hooks stand out from the crowd, by grabbing an audience's attention. Your content cannot blend in with the rest of the field if you want to make an impression.

Why do you need a compelling hook? Because it shows why your business, product, or service is different. It succinctly shows that your business offers innovative solutions and that you understand the unique needs of your audience.

That all can sound complicated, but it's easy when you get the hang of it. Let's look at a few hook examples to help get your mind working.

Ask a Question

How can you grab your audience's attention? With a thought-provoking question, of course!

Questions cause an audience to think more deeply about a subject. They engage your readers' active minds and get them thinking more deeply about a problem before they even begin reading your content. When you ask a reader a question, they draw their own conclusions and then are more likely to keep reading to see if their thoughts match up with yours. You can even use a rhetorical question if it fits.

A question creates intrigue. Your content follows through.

Reader exercise:

  1. Think of a problem your business solves. Write a few ideas down on a piece of paper.

  2. Next, think of some intriguing questions you can use to challenge or address these pain points. You can use these questions as hooks or topics for your content. The more thought-provoking a question, the better the hook.

State a Statistic

Did you know that the average American has an attention span of just 8.25 seconds?

It's true, according to this research from the data collection institute Wyzowl.

That means that you need to grab your reader's attention quickly and prove to them that your content is worth their time. Stating a statistic accomplishes this goal because it proves right away that you have something to offer. You have done research, and you can intelligently speak on the topic. You don't have to necessarily use a startling statistic either, sometimes something that fits with prevailing knowledge can have a powerful effect.

The most important thing you can do is use a statistic that is relevant to your content.

Reader Exercise: Begin assembling a master list of your favorite industry publications. These can be blogs, companies, government sources, research firms, or any entity that is speaking on topics you care about. The more you build this list, the easier it will be to site sources.

Surprise Your Audience (Then Follow Through)

Sometimes the facts just aren't enough.

For certain audiences, you need to grab their attention through a surprising statement. This can be something that goes against the grain, challenges their already-held notions, or otherwise piques their interest.

Create a surprise statement and then follow through. It is not enough to say something shocking and then not elaborate. Make sure you have the research and information to back it up.

Reader Exercise: What are some misconceptions in your industry? Write them down and then identify the truth. Use these true statements as the hook to draw in your readers.
